Managing Color & Size Product Variations

Most rental catalogs are variation problems: same silhouette, many colors, many sizes. If those dimensions are messy, Availability by Date becomes useless and dispatch becomes a hunt.

The business problem

Customers ask in filters—“red, size M, lehenga.” Staff who only know nicknames cannot answer. Wrong variant dispatch is a costly, visible failure.

Why shops struggle

• Color names invented per staff member (wine vs maroon vs burgundy)
• Sizes as free text (“M/L”, “38-ish”)
• One Excel row representing three physical sizes
• No photo when two pieces look similar on the rack

Traditional approach

Group by designer or purchase lot. Works for the buyer who remembers the lot—fails for every new hire.

Better variation process

1. Create controlled Color and Size masters (one “Maroon,” not five spellings).
2. Create Categories and Types that match how you sell (Lehenga / Sherwani / Indo-western).
3. One product record per physical rentable unit with its color, size, SKU, and photos.
4. Use Copy product when adding a new size of a known design—then verify the new SKU.
5. Train counter to filter Availability by Date with color + size before walking the rack.
6. Import catalog via Excel template when onboarding large inventories (categories → types → colors → sizes → products).
